Covenant Love – 10th Sermon in Series: The Life of David – Commitment

2 Samuel 9:1-13

David and Mephibosheth

1 David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”2 Now there was a servant of Saul’s household named Ziba. They called him to appear before David, and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?”
“Your servant,” he replied.

3 The king asked, “Is there no one still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?”
Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in both feet.”

4 “Where is he?” the king asked.
Ziba answered, “He is at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar.”

5 So King David had him brought from Lo Debar, from the house of Makir son of Ammiel.

6 When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor.
David said, “Mephibosheth!”
“Your servant,” he replied.

7 “Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”

8 Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?”

9 Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said to him, “I have given your master’s grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family. 10 You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master’s grandson may be provided for. And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table.” (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)

11 Then Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do whatever my lord the king commands his servant to do.” So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons.

12 Mephibosheth had a young son named Mica, and all the members of Ziba’s household were servants of Mephibosheth. 13 And Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table, and he was crippled in both feet.

My Notes:

How is Christianity different from other religions in their teachings/beliefs?  They all teach about loving one another, etc.  In Christianity, we are taught to LOVE YOUR ENEMIES (Matthew 5).

In groups, people sacrifice in order to commit to something (flourishing of the group, committing to activities, etc).  It takes this sacrifice in order to gain.  We want a God who can have control over our lives but it takes complete submission.  This is the only way to perfect freedom.

`Tis not that I did choose thee, For, Lord that could not be;
This heart would still refuse thee, Hadst thou not chosen me.
Thou from the sin that stained me hast cleansed and set me free;
Of old thou hast ordained me, that I should live to thee.`Twas sov’reign mercy called me and taught my op’ning mind;
The world had else enthralled me, to heav’nly glories blind.
My heart owns none before thee, for thy rich grace I thirst;
This knowing, if I love thee, Thou must have loved me first.”

–Josiah Conder

How do we give up our freedom?

Saul was to annoint David as successor king, not his son Jonathan.  David and Jonathan had a covenant of friendship.  Jonathan gave his life and lost his throne for David out of friendship.

We have a friend who lost his heavenly throne and lost his life for us.

Christian commonality in love for Jesus.

Henry’s notes:

C.S. Lewis = “Abolition of Man”

- All religions of the world the same ETHICALLY (How we live) -> don’t lie, steal, murder, honor family, etc… They differ subterraneanly (How we’re SAVED)

EXCEPTION

“Love Your Enemy”! – unique ethic to Christianity. No other religion.

BUT -> Don’t make it easy for enemies to sin against you.  Do not confront, humiliate, condescend.  Must be loving.

King David

- Didn’t “purge’ old enemies from regime (who could kill him)

- “Adopted” his enemy, generously gave and reached out, made enemy his son.

Christian Ethic to do this? Based on how we’re saved.

How can we do such a thing? Commit or Consume? Commit! Must sacrifice freedom to experience covenant love of peers.

Covenant love -> King Saul’s son Jonathan (rightful heir) -> relinquished trhone to David while “loving” him, protecting David from his father Saul. Eventually laid down his life.

What did Jesus lose and sacrifice for us?

“Christianity is a band of enemies, living with each other through Christ.”

Small Group Wars

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

My back hurts… my legs are sore… I am tired and probably won’t make it to the gym today. I feel like crap but it was all worth it. With all the hard work and effort my small group has put into coming up with ideas, costume, cheer, and strategy for the Small Group Wars last night, everything paid off when they announced we won first place in Small Group Wars! We were the winners and it was one of the best feelings I have ever had in my life.

Cheer: Lisa and I were in charge of the cheer. Vi Na was in charge of costumes. After heavy brainstorming, I gave the group options of which cheer to do. Henry stepped in and helped out by coming up with the moves and formations that ended up giving our group the “wow” factor that looked impressive. Of course, we had to kick in some Naruto moves in there too such as the Kage Bunshin No Jitsu hand symbol, running like a ninja, and Rasengan! I love hearing the audience reactions and it was funny how the loudest uproar was during the running =). We practiced this cheer a lot.. during small group and after church. I love how everyone was dedicated to practicing the cheer. It was an added bonus that we were the grand finale (although I did spend most of the time waiting shaking my leg and being scared and nervous out of my wits).

Towel: Henry and I signed up for the towel toss and two others from our group but we ended up having to do all activities together with another small group – Spam-a-lot so we adapted and got some Spam participation among us. This wasn’t the hottest event. Henry and Albert got the hang of throwing the ball across but the ball tossing between the two was inconsistent. Plus, we weren’t allowed to use the beach towels we brought so we had to stick with the smaller pink towels =[. We got a total of 14 for both rounds but we heard another group got 27 =O.

Relay: Henry and I were supposed to do the shoe kicking thing. I practiced a lot and thought I had it down but we later found that the distance I had to kick was greater than expected and my trial runs weren’t very encouraging. Henry has done this before so he tried doing the kicks. His kicking went further out but when I tried catching the shoe, it came at me so fast and powerfully that I couldn’t catch it. After Bryan’s shoe kicked me in the face from far far away, I gave up my spot and got Bryan to be the catcher. This worked out perfectly as Henry and Bryan were great at this event. Bryan stood still and did a great catch while Henry kicked it right into the goal right away and we had a head start right off the bat.

The second part of the relay was the eating 12 crackers and 2 oranges. Jeff from the Ninjas and someone from the Spam team did this part. Then we had two Spam people do Chubby Bunny where one girl had to stuff marshmallows into her mouth and say something to the other person. It took a while to finally figure this out and it ended up being “South Street Seaport”. The noise from the cheering from the other team didn’t help. Vi Na ran right away towards the other side, did her 3 turns and ran back to draw a pinata which our team guessed in good time. I hear we did pretty well in the relay race but I’m not exactly sure which place we came in.

Stocking: We had Norman and a Spam guy for the guys stocking game and Carol and Jen (the reigning stocking queen at that time) for the girls stocking game. Among everyone, Norman did the best and lasted the longest as he carefully timed his attacks to hook the stocking of every other guy. We screamed out “Go Ninja! Go Ninja! Go!” in support and Norman was the last man standing.

Tug of War: This was the most tedious and brutal part of Small Group Wars. It was so fortunate that we had Henry to lead the team! He huddled us up and gave us strategy, lined us up so we had a good strong anchor, and got us disciplined enough to pull in count to his “one TWO”s. We went through FOUR ROUNDS of this. I was glad to have my workout gloves but I still had some skin from my fingers peel away. It was a test of strength and endurance and our team did a GREAT job. I hear we went against teams with huge guys and our team was pretty tiny comparatively. We had seven guys and seven girls most of the time. Henry had to sit out once since we had to even out players with the other team. We held on until the finals but we ended up with second place. It was so draining for all of us but was still a great feeling and it was nice to have been part of that experience.

We may have lost the battle but we won the war! After they announced 3rd and 2nd place winners, Henry and I didn’t expect to win. What a huge and pleasant surprise it was to us when they said that the first place winners were the Spam Ninjas! Jen took off and ran to get the trophy with the rest of her team cheering behind, hugging and jumping for joy. We were on cloud nine and we held that huge trophy high and proudly. It is a great feeling to be on the winning team with such great people in my small group. =)
