Kwando

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

I was hoping for something like a kickboxing class. I was hoping for more technique. I did sweat a lot. I did get a full hour’s worth of cardio. It may be good for times of the week when I feel like I have had no cardio and I need it. But really I don’t think I can take this class every week. I need a bigger fun factor. I suppose it is a little better than running on a treadmill for an hour. But yea, I’m nixing Kwando from the schedule.

Wednesday:
06:30pm-10:30pm – Shower, Dinner, TV, Rest
10:30pm – Dishes, Get ready for bed
11:00pm – Sleep

Wednesday is again my official “rest” day.

Wing Chun

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

On another topic, Henry thinks Wing Chun would be a good martial art fit for me. I read up on it in Wikipedia. I like the legend behind it:

The common legend involves the young woman Yim Wing Chun (Wing Chun literally means beautiful springtime or praising spring) at the time after the destruction of the Southern Shaolin and its associated temples by the Qing government. After Wing Chun rebuffs the local warlord’s marriage offer, he says he’ll rescind his proposal if she can beat him in a martial art match fight. She asks a Buddhist nun- Ng Mui, who was one of the Shaolin Sect survivors, to teach her boxing; this still nameless style enables Yim Wing Chun to defeat the warlord. She thereafter marries Leung Bac-Chou and teaches him the style, which he names after her.

I think it’s great that it uses the least amount of force for the greatest impact. I like the efficiency and practicality behind it. However, I am worried about the focus on muscle relaxation as I have a hard time doing that. Then again maybe it would be good for me to take it to learn how relax.
